Cored alloys represent an important improvement for products’ reliability and operators’ health. Thanks to this technology, the operator is not in contact with the flux that, located inside the alloy, is released when and where necessary, in just the right amount. So, the probability of flux inclusions is reduced and less fumes are released during the process of brazing. The use of flux cored alloys is still not very popular but it is destinated to spread to the most important applications, including HVACR.

The production of brazed tools, in every field and application, requires top quality row materials and a high level specialistic know-how.

But what do we mean by “brazed tools”? What are their applications and purposes?


In every brazed tool, body and cutting edge are joined together through a brazing process.

The features of body and blade are different, so they are realized with different materials.

The body (resistant and durable) is usually made of steel. In case of breakage of the blade, the body is usually intact and reused. On the other hand, the blade could be often replaced in case of damage. Blade is made of materials that could be grouped into two macro-categories:

  • Based on powders of diamond;
  • Based on cemented carbides.

Brazing is able to guarantee a very strong joint between body and blade, the essential condition to respond to the great effort during material cutting.


There is a wide range of brazed tools which have different shapes and dimensions, in accordance with their purposes. Some of the most common brazed tools are: saw blades, diamond wires, milling cutters, drills and core bits, but also chippers, tools for medical field, digging tools, agriculture tools… And the list is still long!


We find brazed tools in several fields, for working very different materials:

  • Wood

The purposes of wood-working tools are many: cutting of trunks, debarking, refinement of semi-finished products and profiling.

  • Aluminum
  • Plastic
  • Marble, granite and other natural stones

Tools are used for mining, cutting into stone slabs, shaping and finishing.

  • Concrete

Tools for working concrete are generally used for cutting, drilling or coring.

  • Ferrous materials

Again, the aims are various: from rough grinding, to finishing and super-finishing.

  • Heterogeneous materials

It is the case of well drilling, tunnel excavation, mining processing or tillage. For heterogeneous materials, tools should be resistant but also economical, because they are subject to unavoidable breakings and replacements.

A lot of brazing alloys, of different materials and make-ups, are used to realize the wide range of tools. Also the brazing process is not always the same, but it depends on specific needs of production.

  • Materials

There are a lot of suitable alloys, from the most expensive alloys with high amount of silver, to more economical ones with a small amount of silver or even without it. In addition to silver alloys (the most common ones), there are normal or special brasses, copper alloys and nickel alloys.

  • Make-ups

The make-ups are numerous: rods, wires, strips, trimetals strips, powders, pastes, preforms from wire or strip.

  • Brazing processes

The joint between tool’s body and cutting edge can take place through torch brazing, generally in case of non-automated processess, or induction brazing, for series production. Sometimes resistance brazing is used and, in specific cases, also furnace brazing, with protective and vacuum atmosphere.

Copper brazing pastes are homogeneous mixtures obtained from filler material in powder, flux and binder, chosen according to base materials to be joined and oven atmosphere. They are perfectly suitable for low carbon steel and stainless steel. The brazing method that uses copper brazing pastes is particularly appreciated for reasons of productivity and costs.

Before starting the process, copper paste is distributed on surfaces with specific hand or automatic dispensers: they release only the right amount of paste for brazing.

Brazing takes place in static, vacuum or continuous furnaces with controlled atmosphere (protective or reducing). So, you can easily understand that brazing with copper pastes is well-suited for series production, for a great number of standardized joints.

Compared to traditional methods with solid alloys (rings and other preforms from wires and strips) in furnace, copper pastes permit higher productivity and a good saving of costs, but they also require a particular attention to operating procedures.

Fields that use this brazing process are the same that involve series productions, especially automotive, refrigeration and heating systems, electrical industries.

We talk about flux cored alloys when flux, an essential element for the success of brazing, is located inside the alloys. Recently developed, flux cored alloys are an alternative to traditional processes, that require flux separated from alloy, or flux coated rods. The aims are to increase the final results, to reduce costs and to safeguard operators’ health.

This technology is especially suitable for silver and aluminium alloys, but also for brass and copper alloys, in rods, wires and preforms from wire (rings) make-ups. By its very nature, it can’t be used with very thin wires (less than 1 mm in diameter).

In cored alloys, the flux is in powder presentation form, in order to avoid oxidation, and it is along the entire lenght of wire.

This new approach is still not very popular, but it is destinated to spread to the most important applications, where quality of final result and safety of operators are priorities. We can easily understand that innovation of brazing comes this way.


The most familiar method for brazing consists in using flux separated from alloy. This process is very versatile: it is suitable to join every alloy, of any make-up, size and material, with every flux, in powder, past or liquid form. The most important weakness of this method concerns final results, that are linked closely to the technical skills of operator. The common trend to use more flux than necessary can affect the quality of final product and, in any case, it involves high cost for post-braze cleaning. Another limitation is about the safety of operator: during the process of brazing, he is in contact with chemicals and exposed by fumes of flux.

The use of alloys covered by flux is certainly less versatile (it is suitable only for rods), but very frequent, too. Maintainers and installers, who often operate in situations of low practicability, tend to choose this convenient method. The use of coated rods has the same limitations of separated flux. The final resut depends on operator, who must avoid inclusions caused by the large amount of flux around the alloy. For this reason, post-braze cleaning is an expensive process. Then, this method of brazing is unhealthy for the operator, who has to protect himself from physical contact of chemicals and from flux inhalation.


Problems of traditional brazing methods can be overcome by the use of flux cored alloys. In fact, thanks to flux cored alloys, we can obtain these advantages:

  • QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AND STABILITY: inside the alloy, there is the right amount of flux (the quantity you need), that is released when the alloy starts to melt (when you need) and, with appropriate tips, only in predetermined points (where you need). So, flux inclusions are reduced and quality of joints doesn’t depend on operator’s expertise anymore.
  • COST SAVINGS: minimum amount of flux means minimum costs for post braze cleaning, too.
  • MORE ATTENTION TO HEALTH: with the use of cored alloys, safety risks are minimized. The operator is no more in contact with the flux, which is inside the alloy, and less fumes are released.

The main weak point of flux cored alloys is the high cost of production, much higher than separated alloys and coated rods. By the way, you should remember that this technology guarantees top quality of final results, and reduces failures, reworks, scraps and post-braze cleaning.

  • What exactly are brazing alloys and what are they used for?

Brazing is a particular welding system, used to obtain hermetic, with very good mechanical properties and of excellent aesthetic appearance joints.

Brazing differs from welding by the fact that the base materials are not melted during the process, and by the fact that, by this system, it is possible to easily join together also different metals (e.g.: steel to copper, copper to brass, copper to aluminum, etc.).

Brazing alloys are usually available in a wide variety of chemical compositions and of presentation forms, in order to satisfy even the most stringent requirements.
It is possible, anyway, to group them in the following families:

Silver based alloys: used to join all metals, with the exception of aluminum and magnesium, they find their applications in many different sectors, such as general construction, refrigeration and air-conditioning industries, silverware and do-it-yourself.
Copper-phosphorus alloys: dedicated to the joining of copper and its alloys, they are widely used in the refrigeration and air-conditioning sector for the brazing of copper pipes and connections.

Aluminum alloys: used for the low temperature joining of aluminum.

Tin-based alloys: usually known as soft-solders, these alloys find the most applications in the electronic and electrotechnics sectors, as well as in the general construction.


  • Which parameters are needed for an optimal choice for the proper alloy to be used?

First it is necessary to identify the base metals which have to joined. After that it will be possible to select the most appropriate family of alloys to be used. Finally the exact alloy will be chosen considering the desired brazing temperature and fluidity.

It is here important to note that lower melting alloys possess higher fluidity and are usually easier to be used, being ideal for capillary brazing jobs.
Higher melting alloys, on the other hand, are less free-flowing and more suited for build-up and for filling of large joints.

  • MMA (Metal Manual Arc): in this case, welding doesn’t take place with the protection of a gas, but of an electrode. For this reason, it is called Electrode Welding.
